A simple arrangement consisting of a seat pad with two webbing loops ensures that the lap section of a seat belt worn by a pregnant woman resides beneath the pregnancy bump – and cannot ride up over the abdomen. In the event of an accident or emergency stop, the lap belt ensures that the hips and pelvis – rather than the womb – absorb any impact.
Roger Cheetham, managing director of the developer, Clippasafe, said: “When a pregnant woman is a driver or passenger, they may be putting their baby at serious risk. A conventional seatbelt sits right across the woman’s bump, which in the event of a high-impact collision could be incredibly harmful for the unborn baby. A conventional seatbelt can also become very uncomfortable. As a result, many pregnant women choose not to wear one at all, which is illegal and very dangerous.”
