More electrical interconnections can be fitted into a small space thanks to two innovations from PCB edge connector manufacturer In2Connect
.
One solution connects to two rows of pads on each side of a PCB. The second makes linear connectors with a spring at one end, to ensure that PCB edges are always in exactly in the right position when the mate is made.
The alternative is to have large numbers of pins and sockets, which are liable to cause considerable problems when mates are made – whether manually or by machine. Connectors are still one of the most common causes of malfunction in all kinds of system.
Bob Hart of In2Connect showed us a ‘bi-level edge card extender’ made by Sullins Electronics. Because it can accommodate two staggered rows on each side, offers 0.050 in (1.27mm) contact centre spacing instead of 0.100in (2.54mm) spacing, but with the same size pads. The connectors are made with beryllium copper pins with PPS/PA9T insulators for –65 to +150ºC applications or with phosphor bronze pins with PPS/PA9T insulators for –65 deg to +125ºC. Applications include communications, medical equipment and instrumentation and automotive R&D.
As an alternative, the Con:card+ developed by ept and Harting Technology uses a patented GuideSpring in the end of the connector to ensure reliable contact even on a contact pitch of 0.75mm.
