Software helps get a head 03/12/2007

powermill, reverse engineering A giant replica of the head of Roman emperor Constantine has been created with the help of design software from Delcam.

The replica was needed for an exhibition in Germany after it was decided that the original pieces were too heavy and delicate to be shipped from Rome.

The starting point was an STL file created by ArcTron 3D, using a combination of laser scanning and structured light scanning. The next step was to mill the head – from a 25-tonne block of marble – using Delcam’s Powermill, which can machine from STL files.

“Only with an expert team of top-quality software and the latest milling machine technology can such challenges be mastered,” said Delcam sales manager Ferdi Hoischen.
