A piezoelectric ceramic actuator technology can move camera components with micron-level accuracy
Cambridge-based technology company 1 Ltd has developed a piezoelectric ceramic actuator technology that can move camera components with micron-level accuracy.
Helimorph actuators have been used in a mechanism for focusing small cameras. They have an operating frequency from DC to high frequencies and behave electrically like capacitors. The company has also developed a range of small form factor piezo drivers.
The devices are made from PZT, a common piezoelectric material, but can also use other electroactive materials. A block of PZT material will moves at microscopic levels when a voltage is applied to it.
The company says that Helimorph is capable of large displacements whilst having a lower voltage and power requirement. The device has only one silent moving part whereas motors and voice coils require up to six components with lubrication requirements that affect their reliability.
