Automatic digitisation
29/01/2008 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
A Cambridge spin-out company is looking to exploit a technique that generates automatic 3D models from digital photographs

Automatic digitisation.
Martin Weber, founder of Cambridge InnoVision, has demonstrated a VRML model of Kings College that was generated from a series of digital images.
“Clicking on the sky defines the background, then the whole system is automatic – estimating how the camera has moved,” he says. “There has already been interest from the engineering sector, as the system competes with laser range finding.”
Model generation takes a few hours on a PC. End results can be output in formats that include VRML, STL and MPEG-4.
“We are also in discussion with corporates such as utility companies who want to model their unmanned stations to help visiting maintenance engineers find their way around,” says Weber. www.cambridgeinnovision.com
