Prize winning indicator shows time to replace helmets 16/05/2008

A small disk, the size of a ten pence piece, which changes colour when it is time to change a safety helmet, has just won an award.

The Peltor “Uvicator”, sold in this country as the Aearo “Solaris” is a small red disk of treated plastic that when incorporated in a new safety helmet, is initially red all over, but bleaches in sectors under the effects of ultra violet light. When it is white all over, it is time to replace the helmet.

Aearo told us that safety helmets, especially those used in sunny climates, are often still being used when their plastic has deteriorated to the point that they provide little real protection.

Submitted by Aearo Technologies, based in Stockport, it was declared the Overall Winner of the 2008 BSIF (British Safety Industry Federation) Product Innovation Awards, at the just held Safety and Health Expo 2008 event at the NEC, Birmingham.
