EnviroSportscar is an initiative to promote much greener cars, by having races in which the participating vehicles are to produce 110g/km or less carbon while demonstrating, “A performance window similar to that of a Porsche Boxster”, according to CEO Ian Forbes.
Forbes told us that, “There will be a few demo events next year” while the plan is to start the series in earnest in 2010. He aims to provide what he describes as, “An opportunity for major manufacturers to focus on environmental matters in order to give motorsport a reason for being”.
When we asked how it was going to be possible to develop cars with the required combination of performance and fuel economy, he responded, “That’s the challenge” claiming that there were already hybrid and high efficiency engined cars in development that did meet the requirements, which he expected to reach the commercial market in about five years time. The enterprise has already gained public support from: Trakbak Racing, promoters of the FIA & UEM European drag racing championships; SRO Motorsports Group, promoters of the FIA GT Championship; EEMS (Energy Efficient Motorsport) and the Automobile Club de Monaco, promoters of the Rallye Monte Carlo des Véhicules á Énergie Alternative.
