. The EIT's initial governing board, made up of 18 professionals, will be responsible for overall strategy-setting and for the selection, coordination and evaluation of the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), which are the EIT's operational centres.

Professor King is a member of the UK Technology Strategy Board and is a non-executive director of .the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills. In 2007 she was appointed by the UK Government to lead an independent review into 'decarbonising' road transport.

The EIT aims to become a flagship for excellence in European innovation in order to face the challenges of globalization and intends to boost EU's capacity to transform education and research results into tangible commercial innovation opportunities. The Governing Board members were chosen by an ad-hoc independent Identification Committee following a two-stage public consultation.
