Mountain boards speeded by rapid techniques

A German company is bringing boards for a new sport craze to market faster and at a fraction of the cost that would have been incurred using conventional technology.
Flame Offroadboards is working with Protomold to produce 5,000 wheel rim halves for mountain boarding, a sport in which young people slide down mountain slopes without the need for snow.
Professionally manufactured boards cost around 2,000 Euros, but young German entrepreneur Albert Müller saw an opportunity for a design of board that would retail for between 450 and 1,000 euros. The first wheel rims were found to break under extreme conditions so it was necessary to change the material, and turn to a new glass fibre reinforced, stabilised material with greater elasticity, previously used for wheel rims on BMX bikes.
Müller says he would easily have had to pay four or five times more for conventional mould tools from another supplier, and without the flexibility afforded by Protomold.
