Planetary gearboxes for mining

Rugged, planetary gearboxes are essential for the success of the Celtic Miner 4500

Planetary gearboxes for mining, a mining machine specially developed to mine the faulted seams of coal found in South Wales.
The machine has been developed by Metal Innovations, and has a hydraulic cutter and material removal arm that can access coal in seams up to 4.5m high. An integrated conveyor system allows materials to be cut, collected and removed by a single operator.
The machine uses two compact, close-coupled Brevini planetary gearboxes and hydraulic motor units in its bespoke track drive system and another gearbox and motor to power its rotating cutting head.
Today, Celtic Miner 4500 machines are in commercial operation at Metal Innovations Blackbarn mine. The aim, with a staff of 20, is to produce 1,000 tonnes of coal per week. Metal Innovations is continuing with the development of a further range of machines including the Celtic Miner 1500, that will be suitable for seams only 0.8m high.
