The first ever “Formula Zero” race for hydrogen powered cars was won in Rotterdam on August 23rd 2008 in a car built by students at the Delft University of Technology using “Turane” thermoset urethane resins from DSM Composite Resins.
The “Greenchoice-Forze” car used Turane Resins for the body, air channels, floor plate, absorption bumpers and parts of the dashboard. The exterior of the vehicle was reinforced with DSM’s “Dyneema” polyethylene fibre.
Edgar van Os, Greenchoice Forze’s team leader said that: “The DSM products match our desires perfectly. Turane resins flow easily and cure very quickly, so it’s possible to use vacuum infusion to produce large parts that are both extremely light and strong”.
Other participants were Eupla TecH2 from Eupla University in Spain, which won the sprint race on the second day, Imperial Racing Green, HercUCLAS from Los Angeles, Element One from Lawrence Tech in the Michigan, and Zero Emission Racing Team from Groep T in Belgium.
