An emerging strain measurement technique offers great potential for studying damage to materials.

New method could help to determine nature of damage to materials

Delegates at the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) conference, which began today at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, heard how the Virtual Fields Method (VFM) could extend the use of full-field strain measurement techniques.

“One of the largest potential areas of application is the study of the damage of materials,” said Fabrice Pierron of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (Ensam) in France.

He said the technique might be used in two ways: after a material has broken under load; or to identify damage that is already present, as is commonly done using NDT.

The methods might also help to assess highly non-linear materials and welds, said Pierron.

The conference and co-located Emex exhibition run for the next two days.
