Vision system keeps track of surgical instruments

A vision system reading 2D codes is key to keeping track of and managing surgical instruments

Vision system keeps track of surgical instruments.
Instruments are stored in ‘filters’ – which are like small buckets or sieves – each of which can hold 50 to 100 instruments. Ulrich Swiss uses the In-Sight 5400S vision system from Cognex as the basis of its Kenus system for code marking, code reading, and the complete management of surgical instruments at instrument and filter level. Each instrument is permanently marked with a 2D datamatrix code in an area 0.8 x 1.6mm and a drill is used to incorporate the dots of the code into an additional recessed surface. The code reader sits on a desk. Instruments loaded by hand do not need to be precisely positioned as the reader automatically detects the code in the subject field. The In-Sight can perform about 40 readings per second.
