Young engineers are being invited to go online to offer views direct to Parliament on the state of engineering in the UK in a new web-forum opened today by the House of Commons Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee.

Government asks young engineers to express views online

In the course of an inquiry into Engineering, announced in January 2008, the Committee has heard from a wide range of individuals and organisations but now says it is keen to hear directly from those who are studying engineering, are considering doing so, or who are working in engineering. The web-forum offers participants the opportunity to express their opinions on whether engineering a good career choice, what inspired them to consider a career in engineering, whether their education prepared them for a career in engineering and what they would do to improve engineering in the UK.

Views posted online will inform the recommendations the Committee makes to the Government in its final report. It is therefore a valuable opportunity to contribute to the formulation of policy affecting the future of UK engineering.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr Phil Willis, said: “We want to hear what young people think about engineering. What is its image? Are careers in engineering attractive? Why do many young engineers embark on a career outside engineering and what could be done to change this? What inspired them to become an engineer? What did their teachers, parents and others advise them? Has their education helped them in their aim to work in engineering?”

“This is your chance to influence our recommendations on how Government policy might best serve the engineering sector and we hope that as many prospective engineers and young engineers as possible will participate.”

The forum will run until 9 December 2008. The URL for the forum is http://forums.parliament.uk/young-engineers
