Curved folding technology, which was the subject of the cover story in the August 2007 edition of Eureka has reached the point where the first curved folding has been performed by industrial robots
.
The breakthrough technology allows complex shapes to be formed by having robots attach their working ends to metal surfaces and manipulate them, without the need to make expensive press tools. It is particularly appropriate for short production runs or where products, particularly car bodies, are made in many variations according to customer preference.
Gregory Epps is still in charge, the business is still based in London and strong interest in the technology is being shown by BMW. The technology has now been given the name, “Robofold”.
Present partners include: Alt N Research, TIA, SimX, DesignLondon, Trumpf, Staubli, who supplied the robots used in the demonstration, and Panel Technology.
Epps says that, “A demonstration day will be organised in the next few weeks”.
