A free guide in the Wiley ‘Dummies’ series called “BEI Industrial Encoders for Dummies” is available from UK agent Variohm
.
Written in the familiar humorous style, and including useful technical information, it avoids plugging the sponsor, except to provide a few company website reference URLs, and covers the subject in an easy to read manner. Much of the 42-page booklet concerns itself with correct installation and usage, as well as design issues.
Encoders have come a long way since the device devised by Edward M Jones of MIT, who created an organ using an optical disc to encode the tonal frequencies. The code wheel is said to have been made on a master generating machine that took up most of a room in Jones’s house.
The book’s five chapters are entitled: “Getting to know industrial encoders”; “Choosing the right encoder for your application”; “Building quality encoders”; “Designing encoders into your system”; and “Nine things to know about your manufacturer”.
