The five-minute body scan
13/11/2008 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
Siemens has introduced an imaging device that combines the functions of computed tomography (CT) with a high-resolution PET (positron emission tomography) system

The five minute body scan.
The Biograph mCT combines the capabilities of molecular imaging and radiology in a single piece of equipment. Siemens claims that the combination of technologies will allow a full body scan within five minutes.
PET examinations are mainly used to detect and monitor cancerous growths and metastases. This involves injecting the patient with a very small dose of mildly radioactive liquid, which accumulates in cells with higher metabolic rate. Combining PET with CT enables medical professionals to examine the flow of bodily fluids in the organs, whereby a single finding indicates the blood flow and metabolic data. This results in better characterization of tumours of the liver, brain and lungs, than stand-alone PET or CT scans.
