Despite all the gloom and doom in mainstream media about the impending recession, the mood at this year’s CBI annual conference was surprisingly upbeat, with a renewed enthusiasm for manufacturing
.
Lord Mandelson, now secretary of state for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform actually said, “If you really want to choose a career to change the world, choose a career in engineering”. Prime Minister Gordon Brown had earlier said, several times, that the United Kingdom needed the, “Best skill base possible”, “The right technological and physical infrastructure” and a, “Spirit of entrepreneurship”. Top of the list is apparently going to be Crossrail, which we confirmed from its director of technology sitting next to us, and Stephen Green, the chairman of HSBC told people to look for opportunities where, “The world’s centre of gravity will inevitably shift eastwards”, adding that, “Maybe there have been too many engineers working in bank dealing rooms”. There was quite a lot of talk of “High speed Rail” which David Cameron wanted to reach Leeds and Lord Mandelson wanted to reach Hartlepool and much talk of a revival in nuclear power in the UK. Most people we spoke to had full order books. Lord Mandelson said he wanted to hear about any business having trouble with banks.
