Tilt and compass sensors for iceboards
19/01/2009 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
A solid state compass and separate roll and pitch sensors are being used by the Latvian company, Hiberna Iceboards, to develop products for the latest extreme winter sport

Tilt and compass sensors for iceboards.
Each board has stainless steel blades at front and back and a mechanism that allows the user to steer it using body movements.
The company uses a solid state AOSI EX Compass 3A and AOSI tilt sensors from Variohm EuroSensor to determine the relationship between deck tilt and steering bridge rotation on a custom built evaluation rig. The Compass is also used on a 3D model as part of an animated software simulator for iceboard performance training.
For the deck tilt angle input, a roll sensor is attached directly to the deck. Bridge rotation, is determined either from the compass angle input located on the deck, or the pitch sensor attached to a vertical mast using a trigonometric formula to calculate the angle.
