There is a balance between manoeuvrability, comfort and operational effectiveness. Whether it's the weight, size and stiffness of the armour or its overt aggressive nature in peacekeeping environments, there is always a down side to wearing body armour. However tough you make the armour system there will always be a threat that will beat it.
Ballistic and Stab protection has always been an important topic when it comes to the police uniform and the forces battle dress.

In recent years body armour has become an accepted part of police clothing. Once a covert vest, it is now an obvious addition to a police officer's uniform.
This vital piece of equipment has developed and become a more integrated part of the attire, acting not only as protection but as a utility jacket as well, yet it is still a cumbersome add-on, of limited benefit.
IMechE's one-day seminar addresses the need for police to wear body armour, the threats they face and the mechanisms used to protect them. It will consider how the design, (materials, weight, stiffness, manoeuvrability) helps and hinders them with their work.
