Next Generation Body Armour
16/09/2009 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
There is a balance between manoeuvrability, comfort and operational effectiveness. Whether it's the weight, size and stiffness of the armour or its overt aggressive nature in peacekeeping environments, there is always a down side to wearing body armour. However tough you make the armour system there will always be a threat that will beat it.

Ballistic and Stab protection has always been an important topic when it comes to the police uniform and the forces battle dress.

Threat types and levels are always changing, along with improvements in materials and design. We also face a changing world in terms of the public perception of risk. How many soldiers or policemen are we prepared to let die due to lack of protection.

Attending this event will help you:
- What are the threat types and levels?
- What standards must we meet?
- Conformance demonstration and testing
- Body Armour Design, Mechanics of failure and Modelling Techniques
- Available Materials and behaviour
- In-service analysis and performance monitoring
- Comfort and wearability

Technical Advantages
- Confidence that you are aware of and reflecting best practice
- Visibility of the current standards and requirements
- Awareness of what your customers and suppliers are doing
- Finding out what your competitors already know

Be an early-bird! Book before 5 August 2009 and attend at a discounted rate

In recent years body armour has become an accepted part of police clothing. Once a covert vest, it is now an obvious addition to a police officer's uniform.

This vital piece of equipment has developed and become a more integrated part of the attire, acting not only as protection but as a utility jacket as well, yet it is still a cumbersome add-on, of limited benefit.

IMechE's one-day seminar addresses the need for police to wear body armour, the threats they face and the mechanisms used to protect them. It will consider how the design, (materials, weight, stiffness, manoeuvrability) helps and hinders them with their work.

Presentations will illustrate what body armour does and the materials and mechanisms used to achieve this. What limitations and compromises there are and how manufacturing and supply problems can be solved.

By attending you will acquire the following benefits:

• Develop your knowledge of new technologies, design, fabrics and mechanisms in body armour
• Learn about the standards and regulations
• Examine the reasons why body armour will sometimes fail to protect the wearer
• Compare the affects that the practical applications and restrictions of body armour has on the wearer
• Understand the problems and solutions of body armour development
• Learn how you can ensure correct choice of body armour size and type is used in the most appropriate way
• Establish how you can optimise the supply chain
• Understand how the correct training on the use of body armour can lead to improved survivability of personnel
• Meet, greet and network with key industry players
