A recent survey has suggested that women need to think like men to get ahead in a career. But I think that is cobblers.
I think the engineering sector strives to encourage women in to the industry but the simple fact remains; there is a difference between the sexes. As children, girls will tend to play with dolls, boys will tend to go for action figures. It is Mother Nature. But, does this mean that the fairer sex will not make great engineers, of course it doesn't!
The number of women in engineering is low, but those that I have spoken to have never felt held back or disadvantaged because of their sex. We are a learned profession and technical ability is what sets colleagues apart.
We must welcome everyone and anyone who wants to join our profession and encourage it to all. What we actually need are skilled engineers, irrespective of sex.
