More ‘real engineering’ needed

Delivering the Hinton Lecture to the Royal Academy of Engineering earlier this week, industry secretary Lord Mandelson called for more 'real engineering'.

What he actually said was the UK needs 'less financial engineering and more real engineering'. "What strikes me about this phrase is that every time I use it, audience heads start nodding," he noted.
He also noted that 'there is a germ of truth to the fact that, in our country, a lot of money has been put into the money industry over the last decade, when it might have been used to make things'.
It appears this Government has finally understood the importance of engineering and manufacturing to the UK economy. Some may say this has come too late.
But there's an engineering skills shortage. In the near future, there will be announcements about skills and higher education policy. Included, we are assured, will be ways to track the skills demanded by industry and measures to incentivise further education to fill these skills gaps.
There's still much to be done before we are in the position of addressing the major challenges of the coming years.
