Finned plug solves hole problem
27/01/2004 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
When transporting copper tubes, it is usual to insert plastic plugs into the ends to prevent the ingress of dirt

Finned plug solves hole problemProblem: . The normal design is tapered with a flange, so that plugs cannot get pushed right in and can easily be removed when no longer required. Unfortunately, these plugs partially stick out of the ends of the tubes, so they tend to get pried out when tubes move against each other.
Solution: Moss Plastic Parts has devised a finned plug that overcomes such problems, and at the same time, fits more than one diameter of tube.
The shank is cruciform in cross section, with three fins perpendicular to the axis. The lower two fins are thin and flexible, to accommodate different pipe diameters. Cut outs allow passage of air and further assist flexing. The top most disk is slightly more solid to close the hole. The device is fully inserted into the open tube end, and incorporates a small handle in its top which may be grasped between finger and thumb to assist easy removal.
Applications: Designed to prevent unwanted material entering pipes in transit, the SR1069 finned plug suggests an alternative approach to the general problem of designing plastic plugs and bungs. The company already makes an exceptionally wide range of plugs with different types of handle and varying amounts of grip as part of a 9000 item stock list that includes fasteners & fixings, finishing components and hardware, electrical, security seals, general protection, masking and pipe and flange protection.
