Tom Shelley reports on a novel latch for cabinet doors with an overhang
A novel latch is designed to be partially or wholly concealed, attaching to the inside edge of an overhanging door.
The push to close 'Parrot' latch from Southco comes from the marine side of their business, so is suitable for use outdoors as well as indoors. Its name comes from its distinctive profile.
It features an integrated, silicone dampening pad that minimises the closing impact of the hatch or door. An adjustable keeper with three slotted holes accommodates misalignment or manufacturing differences between the door or panel and the frame. The latch requires two screws to install it and the keeper, three.
A simple pull on the textured handle of the latch frees it from the keeper, allowing the door or panel to swing open.
Handle finishes are: black, chrome, satin or diamond brass. The base is acetal, the handle is polycarbonate/ABS and the spring and keeper, passivated 300 series stainless steel. Applications include cabinets in the marine, recreational vehicle and van conversion industries, or clamshell applications on industrial equipment. The latch is 70mm side to side, 50mm wide and 29mm high.
