Semta has launched a new apprenticeship framework to support its Apprenticeship Ambition programme, which aims to double the number of higher level apprenticeships by 2016.

New apprenticeship framework from SemtaThe Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies is seeking to make apprenticeships more valuable to business needs. The new framework, called Improving Operational Performance, will replace the former Industrial Applications framework. The new model will feature business improvement techniques to support companies in the drive towards using lean practices.

The new framework also meets the Specification of Apprenticeship Standards in England (SASE). Improving Operational Performance is based on an analysis of employer needs, and brings together three apprenticeship pathways: Performing Engineering Operations Level 2; Performing Manufacturing Operations Level 2; and Business Improvement Techniques Level 2. These equip apprentices with the basic skills and knowledge to carry out a range of engineering and manufacturing processes at semi-skilled and operator level.

"This new framework is a vital part of our Apprenticeship Ambition," says Semta chief executive Philip Whiteman. "There is a huge demand for Business Improvement Techniques so having a very relevant framework will encourage business to invest in more apprenticeships. We understand the need to be flexible in our approach and we will announce further frameworks to meet employer's latest needs shortly."
