BMW has announced plans to build four wind turbines at its Leipzig factory in Germany, which it claims will generate enough electricity to assemble hundreds of vehicles a day.
 The German auto giant said it wants the factory to become an example of green energy production, one that could eventually be followed in assembly plants worldwide.
Expected to be launched in late 2013, the wind farm is forecast to produce about 200,000 vehicles at a rate of 740 a day.
The development marks BMW's efforts to become a 'leading player' in sustainable production and comes after the announcement of two new electric cars with lithium-ion batteries. The i3 electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid vehicle combine an electric motor with a three cylinder combustion engine and are set to reach the market in 2013.
The BMW i3 city car and the BMW i8 will be the auto manufacturer's first production electric vehicles designed from the ground up as electric or plug in hybrids.
