North East skills focus for Semta

Employers from across the North East are backing action to ensure the region stays at the forefront of growth opportunities and new job creation created by new low carbon technologies.

North East skills focus for SemtaThe initiative has been led by Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing, in a bid to bring together employers and other stakeholders to eliminate the skills gap in the region by 2017.

Semta chief executive Philip Whiteman, pictured, says: "This region is trailblazing a skills strategy like no other around the UK."

The North East faces a number of skills challenges. More than 1,400 recruits are needed every year between now and 2016 to cover retirements and growth; 2,500 employees need to 'upskill' every year to meet anticipated demand and there needs to be a 10% increase every year in the number of apprentices starting.

Already 40 companies have signed up to support the scheme, including Nissan, Gestamp Tallent Automotive and PX Limited. The companies have committed to three work streams, based on growing apprenticeships, improving graduate standards and promoting STEM skills.

"The region still needs more companies to sign up and to support us in the shared vision of tacking the North East's key skills issues by 2017," says Whiteman.
