Autodesk is to offer high-performance simulation capability through a cloud based subscription service. It brings the potential to offer supercomputing data crunching power to anyone, over the web.
 When simulation is carried out on a part or component through its Autodesk Inventor Optimisation service, users will gain multiple refined design options in quicker time. It will not only give more variations - in terms of different optimised variables such as material usage - but will also give better results in terms of resolution and ultimately accuracy.
Additionally, Autodesk Cloud Rendering will give access to powerful rendering capabilities, helping designers better visualise designs, increase the number of renderings they can create and reduce hardware investments.
Autodesk said: "Users only really need to have the results. The actual computing power and computation can take place anywhere else. This opens up the possibility that small and medium sized organisations, anywhere in the world, will be able to access tremendous computing power that has only been available to very large organisations like NASA or Lockheed Martin in the past. That's essentially the advantage of the cloud."
The Autodesk Cloud includes a total of more than a dozen web-based capabilities that will be available to its subscription customers. As well as simulation and rendering capabilities, these include high-performance 3D visual communication and collaboration tools, and will enable users to store, view and share work through web browsers or mobile devices; anywhere, anytime.
Autodesk has been working with Amazon Web Services to securely host its high demand, scalable applications. Amazon Web Services will provide Autodesk with the flexibility to scale computing around the world with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.
Terry Wise, director of business development at Amazon Web Services said: "We are pleased to work with Autodesk to provide secure, on-demand, pay as you go cloud services, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the design and engineering market."
