Nick Clegg has urged manufacturers to go into schools to inspire youngsters into the sector after a survey of 11-12 year olds found not a single child wanted a career in industry.

Clegg urges manufacturers to get into schoolsEnticing pupils towards industry was vital to fulfilling our national potential, Clegg told the government's National Manufacturing Summit in Bristol.

"Tell them they are the generation who can repatriate manufacturing," Clegg urged manufacturing delegates.

The rallying cry came as the government announced an £1billion injection into the Regional Growth Fund at the National Manufacturing Summit.

The cash will be available to businesses and public/private partnerships which create jobs and benefit their local economy, the government said.

The National Manufacturing Summit will bring ministers together with industry leaders to discuss UK industrial strategy.

Mark Prisk, manufacturing minister, said: "The government remains committed to manufacturing, which is why we have placed it at the heart of our Growth Programme. Equally so, showcasing manufacturing as a worthwhile career choice for young people in modern Britain is another goal of government."
