Plastic insert makes simple slide

Tom Shelley reports on a telescopic slide that completely does away with balls, wheels or other potentially troublesome components

Plastic insert makes simple slide

A telescopic slide system had been developed that is made up from three parts: two aluminium and one self lubricating plastic moulding.

The "DryLin N telescopic system from Igus is simplicity itself: a telescopic slide system without wheels, balls or other parts that might wear out or give trouble.

Its maximum length is 600mm closed or 1200mm open. The exact extended length can be accurately set using adjustable end stops if required. Because DryLin N uses self lubricating polymers, it requires no grease or oil and should last virtually for ever without maintenance, provided it is not overloaded. It looks ideal for drawers in filing cabinets and similar applications extrusions, it runs with very little noise, and should make an end of jammed drawers, and drawers that won't close properly. It would also allow them to be pulled out fully, not possible with conventional systems with wheels.

However, it also has many industrial and automation applications, and is FDA approved for use in the food industries. The simplicity of the idea belies the fact that the shapes of the extrusions are quite cunning to improve the distribution of loads and maximise carrying capacity.

It is the latest in Igus's wide range of bearings and slides based on their expertise in the design and manufacture of self lubricating polymer bearings.
