Underwater wireless wins prize for defence

The underwater radio communication system revealed in the November 2005 edition of Eureka and announced as a product in September 2006, has been declared Overall Winner 2006 at the Defence Technology Exchange Innovation Awards.
Previously regarded as either technically impracticable or completely impossible, the idea of sending data by radio waves through water, pioneered by Wireless Fibre Systems, has so far led to the S1510 underwater radio modem and S5510 broadband telemetry link. Brendan Hyland, company chairman said, “I was absolutely delighted to receive the award in our category and even more so to receive the overall winner award. This exceeded my expectations and I see this as a vote of confidence in the R&D being conducted by my team in Scotland. This is tangible recognition of the advances we have made and a real boost to morale.”
The Awards were organised by the Defence Diversification Agency, which is a division of the Ministry of Defence.
