Getting the measure of servos 12/06/2007

A new company, set up in Northamptonshire by Graham Kalko, helps designers adopt economically optimum servo systems in their designs.
Servo Sizing Solution’s main business is to specify electronic servo systems for industrial applications, taking into consideration both the electronic control and mechanical system characteristics.
Kalko explains that it is not only the correct specification of a motor controller that makes for a good system solution. All the system components are equally important, including the actuators and mechanical power transmission equipment.
“We involve ourselves in the complete design process, from concept to finished product”, he explained. “If we stopped at the motor shaft, we wouldn’t be able to ensure that customers realise their expectations.”
As an example of what he can do, he quotes an instance where he replaced a 3kW system with a 500W package on an OEM repeat build machine, saving the customer about £1450 per machine in hardware costs plus the benefits of reduced drive size and energy consumption.
The company has no allegiance to any particular servo equipment manufacturer.
