Rivet nut gives water-proof fastening

In manufacturing and assembly operations, selecting the right fastener can make the difference between achieving the right throughput at the right cost

Problem: . And finding a fast, cost-effective method of mounting high strength M6 or M8 steel threads in pressed parts or sheet metal panels up to 2mm thick can present all kinds of problems. Solution: Coalville-based pierce assembly specialist Profil UK has developed a new, multi-purpose clinch fastener – the EMF nut – to add to its range of rivet nuts. Through their oversize head and extended shank configuration, EMF nuts provide both high pull-out resistance and a self-centring location point for the mounting of further assembly components. The nuts can also be used to create a vital stand-off for spacer applications, such as the securing of aluminium panels to steel sub-frames. The new fasteners feature a shouldered body that is swaged and riveted into the pre-pierced base material to produce a water-proof fixing with exceptional sheer strength and axial load performance. And EMF’s mechanical properties conform to class 8 EN20898 standards and six radial ribs are incorporated under each nut’s head to ensure high torque resistance. Standard M6 and M8 EMF nuts can also be installed within 2mm of component shoulders and at minimum centre distances of 17mm and 22mm respectively, making them particularly suitable for restricted access applications. Applications: The nuts are particularly suitable for automotive, domestic appliance or other sheet metalworking industries. They can be installed either through standalone riveting operations or by using Profil’s own, custom-developed, automatic feeding and setting equipment, in-press as part of the component manufacturing process.
