Detection system automatically brakes for cyclists

Volvo has upgraded its existing pedestrian detection technology to automatically brake for cyclists.

Announced at this year's Geneva Motor Show, the revamped system relies on an advanced radar system mounted on the grille and a high definition camera to discern whether a vehicle is getting too close to a pedestrian or biker. When bicyclists swerve in front of the automobile, the setup immediately alerts the driver and applies full brake power – something Volvo claims is a world's first. The Swedish manufacturer says it will outfit all of its new models with the technology as of May this year.
