Diabetic monitor is wireless for remote monitoring

Believed to be the world's first continuous diabetic monitor with 24x7 remote monitoring, the Dexcom G4 Platinum continuous glucose monitoring system uses Bluetooth Smart wireless technology from Nordic Semiconductor.

Blood glucose dynamic trends (up, down and stable) can be continuously monitored and shared. It uses a secure Bluetooth Smart wireless connection to a partner app on a diabetic's smartphone to monitor dynamic trends in blood sugar levels and share this data securely with others

The Nordic µBlue nRF8001 single-chip-connectivity enables the blood glucose monitor to securely transmit glucose information to a free app running on any iOS Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone. An Android version is also due.

The monitor allows blood glucose readings to be measured up to once every five minutes and shared with mobile devices of up to five designated "follower" recipients who can remotely monitor glucose information and receive alert notifications from almost anywhere in the world with cellular network coverage.

Jorge Valdes, CTO, Dexcom said: "This will not only give much greater insight and more accurate and timely management of the diabetic's condition compared to traditional finger sticks, it will also give diabetics, their loved ones and/or their caregivers the peace of mind to know they are safe at any time."
