Sony’s 3D Creator App will make full colour 3D printing more accessible

Sony has introduced a 3D scanning app, called 3D Creator, to its Xperia XZ1. This pre-loaded application has the ability to generate realistic 3D scans of objects and people in under a minute. The file can then be sent to a full colour 3D printer to be printed out.

“Sony’s 3D Creator app will certainly open the market for full colour 3D printing by providing an accessible scanner that produces high quality files – essentially a 1000 scans in your pocket,” said Dr Conor MacCormack, co-founder and CEO of Mcor Technologies. “We see this as a driver for full colour 3D printing and our technology in an industrial and consumer setting because now there is a scanner to hand that can match our full colour 3D printing capability.”

The technology is being demonstrated at TCT 2017 by 3D printing company Mcor, which will be using it’s ARKe full colour 3D printer to demonstrate the quality of the output from Sony’s scanning app.

Ciaran Cleary, account director at Sony Mobile Communications Ireland said: “We are capturing more content on mobile than ever before and the 3D Creator feature, a first for smartphone, allows builders, makers, creatives and consumers an easy way to scan or print captured memories.”
