3D Printing takes LPE to the red carpet...

From X-Men to Game of Thrones, Lady Gaga to Mrs Browns Boys, show business is turning to 3D Printing and LPE to help produce costumes, jewellry, armour and props for major productions and live shows.

3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping have traditionally been the chosen weapon for the discerning designer and the hard working engineer, trying to verify new designs and manufacturing methods for latest products hurtling towards the marketplace.

More recently 3D printing has helped out on the sets of many blockbuster movies, high profile TV Productions and even live shows for major pop stars

LPE produced a pair of rings worn by Lady Gaga for her tribute to David Bowie at the Grammy awards earlier this year. The “mood rings” were 3D printed by LPE in Belfast, finished , hand painted and shipped to the show all within 3 days – impossible to achieve any other way! Gaga has also used 3D printing on several occasions to show off her “bizarre” fashion sense, with entire dresses 3D printed from SLA.

The hit TV series Game of Thrones has its filming base in Belfast, and the costume team has relied on LPE since Series 2 to produce items of jewellery, armour, costumes and general props, all 3 D printed and expertly finished to fit seamlessly into the fantasy tale.

LPE has also provided SLA models for the Cerebro helmet in X Men, SLS models for the set of Mrs Browns Boys da Movie and even highly detailed 3 D printed animals for BBC nature documentaries.

Using 3 D printing techniques and expert hand finishing has allowed production companies to produce complex, accurate parts and props faster and better than any other way possible. So next time the popcorn comes out, look out for those Iron Man suits, Star Wars weapons, and blood curdling Westeros warriors, and remember – where would they be without RP??
