Adhesives meet environmental concerns

The Loctite brand has been at the forefront of adhesive development since the 1950s. From that time a wide range of adhesive technologies have been introduced including, anaerobics, epoxies, cyanoacrylates, polyurethanes and silicones.

Threadlockers, those adhesives that are designed to do just that – lock threads – have been around for over fifty years. And over that half a century improvements have continued to be introduced. Among other benefits, strengths have increased, oil tolerant versions have been developed and, of course, environmental considerations have been implemented. Loctite 2400 and Loctite 2700 are two new threadlocking adhesives from Henkel that meet the most stringent Health and Safety requirements. Developed in Henkel's Dublin laboratories, both medium-strength Loctite 2400 and high-strength Loctite 2700 have qualified for a "white" Material Safety Data Sheet. This means that according to the tough EC Regulations No. 1907/2006 - ISO 11014-1 neither adhesive carries any hazard symbols, risk or safety phrases. In addition, they do not contain any declarable carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxins. While breaking new ground in occupational Health and Safety, the traditional high performance of Loctite brand threadlockers has not been compromised – including high strengths and ease of use. It took more than a year of constant evaluation before the project achieved the required result. During that time, Henkel engineers co-operated with a number of demanding customers whose medical officers took a personal interest in the project and gave direct feedback on the various prototypes. The result is a new standard in the area of industrial threadlocking technology. Loctite 2400 is fluorescent blue and would be used where fasteners needed to be removable for future servicing. The high-strength Loctite 2700 is fluorescent green and would be used where a more permanent lock is required. Once cured, both products offer excellent sealing resistance against most industrial chemicals. They achieve good thermal resistance, withstanding continuous operating temperatures up to 150°C.
