Cash automation benefits from fully moulded static-conductive shaft and rollers

BNL’s cash automation customer was curious as to whether an integrated shaft and roller, fully moulded in static conductive materials, could replace expensive steel parts and other components without compromising performance in their cash recycler application.

A global provider of cash automation solutions for financial institutions, retail operations and transport companies, wanted to replace an expensive metal shaft and rubber roller assembly in their high volume, high speed banknote recycler.

BNL specialise in combining individual components into custom-designed, integrated bearing products – but in this project, the customer did not require any bearing function. However, they were keen to take advantage of the reduction in component cost and weight offered by BNL’s integrated designs. Specific operational requirements included static electric conductivity and rigidity of the shaft.

BNL integrated the shaft and rollers into a design that is lightweight and static-conductive. Manufactured by over-moulding a carbon-filled polyamide shaft with conductive polyolefin elastomer rollers, this single, integrated part, snap-fits into the machine, reducing component count and cost, weight, assembly-time and fixings. This lighter shaft also requires less energy at start up and in operation, offering energy efficiencies and savings in motor specification.

Using manufacturing processes developed for static-conductive materials, the product has been moulded to include custom designed features and integrated components, in materials that repel the paper dust generated by high volume note processing, preventing paper jams. By moulding strengthening ribs on the shaft less plastic is used to mould the part, minimising material cost and cycle time without losing rigidity or quality. Further component cost and assembly savings are achieved by eliminating the earthing contact needed with a metal shaft.

BNL works with some of the world’s leading ATM and cash processing OEMs, supplying custom-designed plastic bearings and integrated components that are used in recyclers, cash dispensers, check processing machines, coin counters and note processing modules.
