Direct drive linear stage delivers high throughput for step and scan applications

Dover Motion’s XMG series of miniature micropositioning stages feature a linear motor design that is claimed to deliver up to five times more force and twice the force density when compared to similar products.

The XMG is suited for demanding applications that demand rapid speeds and smooth motion with consistent and stable velocity or force characteristics – especially where a small form factor is required. These characteristics enable improved throughput capability with benefits that include more moves-per-minute for part positioning, faster step & scan cycles, increased focussing rates and faster frame capture times.

The XMG is available in steel or anodised aluminium, with a stiff cross-roller bearing arrangement and cog-free motor, travel range options are 25, 50, 100 and 150mm. The compact stage is approximately 92mm wide and is capable of payloads up to 10kg or more. Linear encoder feedback options are available in analogue or digital formats with resolution from 1 to 0.001µm.

The modular miniature linear stages can be combined for XY or XYZ geometries and include externally adjustable limit and home sensors. Optional Z-axis counterbalance mechanics are available in compressed air or a magnetic design. Thanks to its force density rating, the XMG is said to have a best-in-class vertical load rating of 500g without needing a counterbalance.
