sensors test and measurement

In the manufacturing sector, Sensors, Test & Measurement encompasses a dauntingly broad range of technologies. Even the term sensor covers such a wide variety of applications and devices that it is almost impossible to define. Hall Effect, Proximity, Potentiometer, Strain Gauge, Flowmeter, magnetic ring encoder – the list goes on and on. Anyone who thinks ‘sensor’ just means eddy currents used to observe vibration and position or pressure transducers is a long way from being up to speed.

Equally, in the field of Test and Measurement, there is a daunting variety of applications and technologies for the design engineer to absorb – from non-contact measurement to cutting edge metrology.

With this in mind, Eureka seeks to offer a guide to the latest technologies, allowing readers to keep abreast of the developments in this sector.

Andy Green’s Bloodhound Project diary

The thing about setting a land speed record is that speeding up is only half of the problem. Once you've gone flashing through the timing lights of the measured mile at over 1000mph you are faced with stopping a heavy, very high speed vehicle in a limited distance (about 5½ miles on our chosen track on Hakskeen Pan in South Africa). 5½ miles sounds like a long way, but if you're doing a mile every 3½ seconds, it doesn't seem that far at all!
