Semta scheme to support graduate recruitment

Graduates and those studying science and engineering at university are being urged to sign up to a scheme which could lead to work experience and a permanent job.

Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing, is looking to match potential employees with employers in the sector as part of a bid to get more homegrown talent into industry. "There are real, well paid jobs with long term career prospects for graduates in advanced manufacturing and engineering," said Lynn Tomkins, Semta's UK operations director. "We want to make it easier for them to find a job, which is why we want graduates to upload their CVs. We will help match them with employers and support them through interviews and hopefully into the workplace." An additional 200 graduates are expected to be recruited by businesses in the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector across the UK after funds to support their employment and training were announced last month. It is hoped that the initiative will deliver genuine reductions in youth unemployment by March 2013. "This money will make a real difference," added Tomkins. "Only 15% of SMEs in advanced manufacturing and engineering employ graduates. Our ambition is to see this rise to 17% over the next three years."
