Swissbit wins order from Siemens worth millions

Siemens is set to incorporate a MultiMedia Card (MMC) from Swissbit into one of its automation solutions.

According to Swissbit, the main requirement in the development of the technology consisted of ensuring backwards compatibility through to the first generation of devices, in addition to being usable for the latest technologies. In light of this, the company has designed an adapted interface and a Siemens specific firmware package, which is said to support the MMC and SPI protocols. High quality components as well as intelligent firmware mechanisms have been developed to ensure a long service life with guaranteed data retention. The MTBF rating is said to lie at more than 4,000,000hours. The company says that a 'wear levelling' optimised to the application case guarantees a maximum write frequency through the even distribution of all data accesses via the entire flash storage area. The data security is said to guarantee the 'power fail protection' and ensure that in case of unexpected interruption of the power supply, even tthe last write accesses are stored in a controlled way, so that no loss of data occurs. The flash monitoring has been designed to provide information about the remaining lifetime of the MMC at any time. It continuously checks the card during ongoing operation, so that a replacement can be planned through the evaluation of the relevant indicators.
