Why 3D printing should eliminate the warehouse

Many manufacturers operate lean processes and have reduced the amount of spare parts stocked to reduce costs. Some OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers have even taken this philosophy to the extreme by completely doing away with inventory by introducing Just-In-Time spare part initiatives. However, these production methods carry significant downsides such as how to deal with legacy stock parts and the risks of delays to production lines when supply for materials or parts can’t keep up with demand. So, is there a better way?

A recent whitepaper by 3D printing manufacturer Stratasys looks to challenge manufacturers and highlight why digital spare parts that can be printed on demand is the ultimate lean measure. In the whitepaper (available free to download here), Stratasys consider where businesses can seize short and long term opportunities, and explains why 3D printing spare parts on demand is a realistic business model not just for the future, but for today.

The whitepaper highlights some examples of companies that have successfully implemented a digital inventory and the considerations needed to make both the technical and economic business case on feasibility by looking at factors such as component material, size, function and costs against traditional warehouse storage.
