New sensor blows hot and cold

Dean Palmer discovers a new sensor blower that accurately monitors vehicle climate control systems for improving passenger comfort and safety

A sensor blower unit has been developed that samples air temperature in the passenger compartment of motor vehicles for automatic climate control. ebm-papst says its new S2000 sensor blower "provides tight control of temperature, offering much improved passenger comfort and safety". The sensor blower unit draws in air from the vehicle cabin, the temperature of which is used as a control signal for the climate control system to adjust heating or air-conditioning to meet the desired temperature. As such, the feedback system used ensures very close control of temperature. As a modular concept unit, the S2000 is versatile and can be fitted in roof lamps, compartments, climate control units or in a standalone position anywhere in the passenger cabin. The company claims the S2000 "is more compact than and has more configurations than units from other manufacturers". But crucially, the unit features a unique winding/magnet construction that eliminates any possibility of stall. The sensor blower is also ideal for fitting into small gaps and spaces, measuring just 33mm in diameter by 41mm in length. 12V DC versions are standard but a 24V version is also an option. An electronic version with built-in drive electronics, the S2000E, is also available. All units in the range have optional, integrated NTC temperature sensor availability. Other options include a tacho signal facility. Electrical connection is via PCB mountable pins and the unit features the company's patented sleeve bearing, SINTEC. Gareth Jones of ebm-papst Automotive & Drives UK commented: "The S2000 was launched eight months ago but our complete range of automotive fans and blowers is being used by major automotive OEMs on a range of applications for cars such as seat ventilation systems [Mercedes], climate control systems and active steering systems."
