Self engaging clamp makes sheet lifting easy

Picking up and carrying large metal sheets is never easy

Problem: . Lifting from beneath is inherently unstable, so what is required is a method of lifting from the top, preferably one which adapts itself to different sheet thicknesses and is completely fool proof. Solution: The Dutch company, inter product, has a long record of developing devices for picking up sheet, but their latest automatic device, Model IPU10/A, is particularly ingenious. In the words of sales engineer, Boris van der Kolk, "It works like a mouse trap." The grab is dropped down on the edge of the metal sheet, with its release lever in the 'up' position. The edge of the sheet engages against an internal pawl, which releases a toothed cam under spring pressure. The sheet is then held by the rotation of the toothed cam. When the weight of the sheet is no longer pulling the cam down, it is possible let the sheet go by pulling the release lever down, releasing the spring force on the cam. Applications: Versions have been developed capable of lifting sheets up to 50mm thick and weighing up to 6 tonnes. A new version will have safety caps on each side, to prevent the possible insertion of fingers. The largest version is sufficiently heavy that it triggers itself under its own weight, so it is not necessary to press it down onto the sheet edge. A special version is under development for use lifting large constructions made of composite and other materials that might be easily damaged. The company also makes a wide range of other lifting hooks and clamps for different tasks, including the lifting of rolled steel joists, drums and crucibles. UK agent is Certex TS inter product Certex
