Encoders offer micron or nanometer resolution

A new range of linear encoders, with unique electronics and optics, has been launched that offer linear resolutions from 5 microns to 5 nanometres.

MicroE Systems' 'Mercury' encoders (distributed in the UK by Inmoco) are based on the company's patented 'SmartPrecision' electronics and 'PurePrecision' optics technologies. According to Inmoco, technical advantages include programmability; miniature sensor sizes; broad alignment tolerances for easy set up; accuracy improvements; optical index; and a very diverse range of operating resolutions and speeds.

The optical design of the encoders give users flexibility, a high fidelity signal and a wide resolution range. PurePrecision uses the diffraction of reflected light to create a sensor with a very shallow, very wide detection plane. This means the Mercury sensors are half the height, a tenth of the volume and a fraction of the weight of other encoders. In addition, one sensor design can operate in both linear and rotary applications.

The optics also offer an alignment tolerance advantage. They can be aligned in less than 30 seconds and, in many cases, the MicroE sensor can be mounted on a reference surface and will operate without further adjustment.

Scalability is another benefit. Because the signal can be interpolated to extreme levels. The encoders can meet every resolution requirement, from micro to nanometer level.

There are 21 different encoder models (linear and rotary) so OEM engineers can select the version that best fits the application. Programmable, digital, analogue and vacuum models are available.
