Realistic Engineering Analysis Limited (REAL)

REAL was set-up by Bob Johnson in March 2013 to address Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based consultancy and training. Bob has been making complex FEA models since the early 80's and his training courses have been running since the mid 90's. Lately REAL has added making physical models to its range of services.

Realistic Engineering Analysis Limited was set-up to provide meaningful and accurate stress analysis, firstly by carefully-built FEA consultancy models and secondly by teaching the "artistry" of realistic FEA to aspirant users. REAL provide consultancy services on a fixed-price and time/materials basis and employ the Abaqus system (courtesy SSA Limited) for the main solution phase. REAL take great care in model preparation so that assembly models predict sensible contact stresses, show global accuracy, and solve efficiently with rapid convergence. All models are constrained in a minimal fashion so that the supports do not add stiffness to the model/assembly. Results verification is carried out using hand-calculations and simplified models (such as 2D plane stress and axi-symmetric analysis). REAL has direct experience in the energy and offshore areas of industry with threaded connections being the main area of specialist knowledge. In June 2013 REAL was awarded with a 'real' modelling contract and this was to manufacture a wooden replica of a typical jacket lift node. The model used approximately 100 plywood rings of 18mm thickness and these were glued together in a manual 3D-printer type of fashion! The jacket lift node is shown below. Bob Johnson completed the original stress analysis of this node in 1994 so it was apt that he should make a wooden replica to compliment the earlier stress model.
