How zigzag e-chains save space and keep lighting rigs moving

For applications that require vertical cable management, especially those with space constraints, the zigzag energy chain from igus has proven to be particularly successful. In this week’s video, we see a variety of cables – including power and data - being managed on a moving stage lighting beam. When it is raised, the zigzag e-chain quietly folds upon itself in a visually neat, tidy and unobtrusive way.

The zig zag installation is achieved by reversing the links of the energy chain which then creates a fold. This can be done several times, depending on the length of the energy chain and the space required. Once retracted, the system becomes very compact and the housed cables are protected in a basket with a minimum bend radius enforced by the energy chain.

The energy chains also ensure good separation and strain relief of the cables while the zigzag system is in motion. To control and contain the zigzag system when stowed, igus offers a standard basket solution or can create one to meet a customer’s exact requirements. To help lighting, sound and stage technicians speed up their installations, igus can supply zigzag readychains, which are fully populated with cables, connectors, fitted in the basket and ready to install
