More than meets the eye: The real-life Transformer

Japanese firm Brave Robotics and amusement park ride manufacturer Sansei Technologies have developed a robot, called the J-deite RIDE, that transforms into an electric car that can transport people.

Clearly inspired by the classic children’s TV show and subsequent Hollywood blockbuster franchise, the designers say it’s the first time a machine of this kind has been able to carry people in a functioning vehicle.

Brave Robotics’ YouTube channel states that J-deite RIDE is a two-seater electric vehicle that can change form into a humanoid-style robot, even while the passengers are inside the vehicle. While it is clearly tethered in the video, the process seems automated and takes just a few minutes.

As the video shows, when it is in robot mode it can also walk, albeit not very quickly.
